Becker Chiropractic
San Mateo, CA · Chiropractic
I graduated as valedictorian from Life Chiropractic College West in Hayward, California, where I was honored with the Presidential Award for academic achievement, leadership, and clinical excellence. My academic journey began on the pre-medical track studying Human Physiology at Boston University. After experiencing years of daily migraines with no relief from traditional medical approaches, I discovered chiropractic care. The significant improvement I experienced not only changed my health, but ultimately inspired my decision to pursue the chiropractic profession. I have a strong interest in soft tissue care and frequently incorporate therapies such as myofascial release and kinesiology taping to help patients move more comfortably and confidently. I especially enjoy working with individuals experiencing vertigo, hypermobility spectrum disorders, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction—conditions that are often overlooked yet can greatly affect quality of life. My primary adjusting technique is the Activator Method, which I integrate with manual adjustments when appropriate. For patients with hyper-mobility spectrum disorders and joint instability, this gentle, instrument-assisted approach offers a safe and effective alternative to traditional high-velocity “cracking” techniques, while still restoring proper joint motion. During chiropractic school, I was diagnosed with hyper-mobility, upper cervical instability, and basilar impression, which required me to change the type of care I was receiving. Through this experience, I developed a deeper appreciation for precise, low-force techniques. Activator care has allowed me to manage my symptoms effectively without worsening my hyper-mobility, and this personal experience informs the thoughtful, individualized care I provide to my patients. Living with hyper-mobility has also driven me to seek out additional education and training related to connective tissue disorders and joint instability. I am passionate about integrating clinical strategies that better serve this often under-recognized population, and I bring that knowledge into my care for patients facing similar challenges.

Since around 2022 I have increasingly specialized my work as a Medical Massage Therapist with those with hypermobility and related conditions: mast cell activation syndrome, autoimmunity, migraine, chronic pain, neurovascular compression syndromes, food/drug/environmental sensitivity, joint instability, dysautonomia, gastroparesis, and more. I have gradually grown into Patient Advocacy as well as a result of seeing how underserved this community currently is. I completed a brief but very high quality training with the EDS Society in Health Advocacy in early 2025. I intend to pursue formal Board Certification in Patient Advocacy also in 2025. As a massage therapist , I work with pain and physical dysfunction related to all of the above conditions. My goals are to: help clients better understand and address their pain by understanding whatever physiological and mechanical principles we can observe, help clients reset dysfunctional movement patterns and gradually replace guarding patterns with more balanced posture, strength, and tone, while mechanically freeing any barriers to relief using scar release, golgi tendon organ techniques, visceral work, neurovascular compression testing and release, postural assessment, and many, many more tools learned or developed in over a decade of manual therapy experience, support clients in working toward further wellness by connecting them with local hypermobility-aware healthcare providers and coaches (physical therapists, occupational therapists, corrective exercise specialized personal trainers, feldenkrais, pilates, and Egoscue teachers, etc.) who can offer more in-depth training as needed–ideally in activities that clients will be inspired to maintain, help clients to reach the right healthcare providers to address any open healthcare concerns –whether we need to look together locally for an appropriately aware provider in the right specialty or far-afield to address less-understood implications of hypermobility. As a patient advocate, I’ve made my mission to improve local healthcare for hypermobility and related conditions by: hosting our local EDS Society affiliated group to share information and other resources and to grow community among those who mutually understand the particular challenges of these conditions and can offer suggestions and connections born of experience, connecting clients with local and distant healthcare providers whom I trust to work well with hypermobility and related conditions, working with clients on presenting often long and long unaddressed history of symptoms such that the big picture won’t be missed for its complexity, bringing healthcare providers’ attention to hypermobility related, presently underdiagnosed conditions connect clinicians with high quality resources on how to best serve those in our community educate community members in a position to screen for hypermobility and related conditions before they become health crises: midwives, doulas, teachers & athletic coaches…. facilitate the involvement of advanced specialists in offering local training to grow needed expertise in our own community. This mission is a labor of love. I have seen too many family members as well as clients go with unaddressed healthcare concerns for years, navigating very difficult situations for themselves since too little was known or the right connections weren’t made–in a system that further privileges those with uncomplicated health and resources. We’re entering a season in which to begin to build the manual for caring for the hypermobile, sensitive body from the start. I believe our sensitivity is a gift and that as we use it to understand our own better care we’ll better the world as well–bringing more of ourselves to all the good efforts we dream of. I’m glad to offer a brief free consultation for advocacy or bodywork services, and you can also connect for free by asking to have your email address put on our local group’s email list. In order to maximize accessibility I offer a sliding scale and I work with insurance wherever possible. Though credentialing opportunities are limited for massage therapists, I’m currently able to work with Cigna and Mi Via. I’m working toward being able to work under VA funding and with HSA and FSA payments. If superbills, receipts, or other documentation helps you to get reimbursement I’m glad to provide it.

As a long-time mindfulness practitioner, meditation devotee, and lifelong learner, I am currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Physical Therapy to investigate mindfulness-based movement, resilience, and pain modulation through novel therapeutic approaches integrated with measurable physical therapy outcomes. My research focuses on chronic pain conditions, including hypermobility spectrum disorders, hEDS, and fibromyalgia. Clinically, my work spans connective tissue disorders (including hEDS and related hypermobility syndromes), craniocervical instability and cervicalgia, neurological and complex pain conditions, pelvic health, and multifactorial orthopedic presentations. I believe deeply in treating the whole person by integrating physical, neurological, and psychosocial dimensions to optimize outcomes. My therapeutic approach incorporates Pilates-based rehabilitation, breathwork and autonomic regulation, proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) and postural restoration, select osteopathic techniques (including craniosacral, visceral, and counterstrain methods), cognitive multisensory rehabilitation, lymphatic drainage, and other specialized body awareness training. I currently provide private clinical care in New York and Minneapolis.

RLA & Umi (Unbounded Movement Intelligence) seeks to bring EDS and HSD patients and their caregivers the hope and courage to face the daunting task of living with these conditions. My specialty is complex cases and those in acute states who have been unable to find specialists to accurately diagnose the presenting symptoms. To aid in this effort I spend as much time as each client needs to help sort through confusing, difficult symptoms, find providers, and help prepare to meet those providers with confidence. From communication dynamics and medical organization to life coaching with chronic illnesses, disability and evidence based educational resources for growth, self-advocacy and peace of mind, my vision is to help create a bridge between patients and their physicians that turns years of struggle into years of recovery, stability and a path forward. I offer telehealth services to offer diagnosis and management of hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and comorbidities. I have options to take on more complex patients, and offer appointment times with a minimum of one hour each. I generally spend 1-2 hours with each patient for every visit and am readily available for follow up through the portal or via telehealth. I have a special interest in occult tethered cord and craniocervical instability, and the role of the immune system in the disease pathology of EDS. I previously have worked at the EDSclinic.com and I also had the privilege of working with Dr Anne Maitland. I have attended numerous project echo cycles and EDS seminars. I am licensed in the states of NC, CT, OH and MI. I also offer consultations via telehealth anywhere in the world. I have HEDS myself, and my 3 children do as well. My goal is to increase access to patients in need of diagnosis and management, as well as educating my patients’ providers. I believe no one should have to wait 2 years to receive a diagnosis and guidance about managing comorbidities.

Dr. Ryan Tran is double board-certified in Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine by the American Board of Anesthesiology. After completing medical school at Texas Tech School of Medicine in 2003, Dr. Tran completed his residency in anesthesiology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston in 2007. Subsequently in 2008, Dr. Tran completed his pain fellowship at the prestigious pain management fellowship program at the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center. In the pain world, the Texas Tech pain management fellowship is well thought of because of Dr. Gabor Racz. Dr. Racz is considered to be one of the founding fathers of the specialty of pain medicine. Dr. Tran was fortunate enough to train under him and to have learned his innovative techniques and many “secrets” towards managing patients in pain. After finishing his pain fellowship in 2009, Dr. Tran began working at Scott & White Hospital in Killeen, Texas as an attending physician. During his time there, Dr. Tran helped thousands of patients in Central Texas. Since his pain clinic in Killeen was directly across from Fort Hood (the largest military installation in the world), he was especially honored to have helped many active military soldiers and veterans find innovative options for their chronic pain. While working at Baylor Scott & White, Dr. Tran was also actively involved in training residents and pain fellows as an assistant professor at Texas A&M Health Sciences Center College of Medicine. Worth mentioning, Dr. Tran was one of the original four attendings who helped start the pain management fellowship at Texas A&M Health Sciences Center College of Medicine at Baylor Scott & White in 2012. He enjoyed teaching his students the art of pain medicine, the innovative techniques he learned from Dr. Racz, and new ones he acquired over the last decade. Dr. Tran was on staff teaching residents and treating patients at Baylor Scott & White until the end of 2022 when he moved his family to the DFW area to be closer to family. He is married to a supportive and loving wife and is the father to two active boys. When he is not caring for patients, Dr. Tran enjoys getting bested in golf by his two elementary school aged boys who play golf competitively. It is Dr. Tran’s desire to guide patients towards compassionate and innovative care. He looks forward to sharing all of the “secrets” that he has learned with his patients and colleagues.

Alex Minten is a physical therapist with over 13 years of clinical experience. He specializes in treating diagnoses of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and surrounding muscles, neck pain, headaches, postural dysfunction, vertigo/dizziness, and conditions associated with hypermobility syndromes such as upper cervical or craniocervical instability (CCI). Alex uses an evidence-based approach to address not just the symptoms but the root causes of his patients’ problems and ensure a successful long-term outcome. He also has special interest in the contribution of sleep and the airway to TMD development. Over the years, Alex has worked with many patients with hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD) including Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) and realizes the importance of short-term symptom management and long-term stabilization and function. Given that almost 70% of those with generalized hypermobility or EDS have temporomandibular disorder related pain and/or neck pain and headaches, Alex believes that a thorough understanding of a patient’s contributing impairments co-morbidities is key to ensuring long-term improvement. Alex has completed extensive continuing education on the evaluation and treatment of disorders of the TMJ, head, and neck including education specific to hypermobility/instability through multiple renowned organizations including: American Academy of Orofacial Pain University of Minnesota School of Dentistry Craniofacial Therapy Academy (CRAFTA) Academy of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy Myopain Seminars
