Dr. Bergfield (she/they) is a clinical psychologist who works in behavioral medicine/health psychology. She specializes in trauma, identity, and grief work, as well as chronic pain and illness. She has a special interest in working with individuals who have EDS/HSD and has worked with numerous individuals providing individual therapy, group therapy, support groups, and psychological assessment. She used to be the Research and Registry Coordinator for the Ehlers-Danlos Society and did her dissertation on personality traits in individuals with different types of EDS. She works in two different outpatient offices, Behavioral Medicine and at the Norman Prince Spine Institute. She sees people in person and virtually and is licensed in the state of Rhode Island. We specialize in treating clients with complex, painful and disabling medical conditions that are interconnected with mental health conditions. Some conditions that we provide support for are: Anxiety Disorders, Depression, Pain Management, Stress Management, Adjustments, Disability and Rehabilitation Counseling & Advocacy, Life Transitions, Medical Trauma and other Trauma contributing towards PTSD. Susan Hurd, MA, CAGS, LMHC has Skillfully and Compassionately treated many persons over the years with Connective Tissue Disorders including Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, EDS, and Fibromyalgia and co-existing conditions such as: Dysautonomia, Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, MCAS causing allergies, Chemical Sensitivities and Fragrance Sensitivities. She also is a Certified Lyme Disease Literate Therapist. She has certifications and trainings in Mind-Body Trauma, & PTSD. She has a trauma certificate, “The Body Keeps Score” with leading Harvard Medical PTSD researcher and medical expert, Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, MD, also author of the Best Selling Book, ” The Body Keeps Score. She also training in EMDR. She also has training in the Expressive Arts. Susan Hurd, MA, CAGS, LMHC did her 3500 clinical training hours at the Rehabilitation Hospital of RI in an integrative medical pain clinic, Healing Choices with Medical Director, Dr. Keith Rafal, MD, Brown University Medical. She then continued to work at the Healing Choices for many years until she opened her own Private Practice, The Mindful Living Center. While at Healing Choices, she received excellent clinical training treating many with Fibromyalgia, and other Connective Tissue Disorders including Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, EDS, as well as other Auto-immune Conditions and Lyme Disease. She also treated people with Traumatic Injuries and Traumatic Brain Injuries, TBI’s and Concussions. Working at the Rehabilitation Hospital of RI gave Susan Hurd, LMHC, excellent training in Disability & Rehabilitation Counseling and Advocacy, as well as in Health Psychology, Mind-Body Medicine and Psychotherapy Counseling Approaches to treating mental health conditions.
