My specialty is the Rolf Method of Structural Integration, which I have advanced training in and have been practicing since 2002. Structural Integration is a hands-on soft tissue (myofascial focused) method designed to bring more order into the human structure over a series of 10-sessions. The goal is a more organized, orderly structure in a supportive relationship with gravity. Throughout the series, the whole structure is addressed in a systematic and wholesome way. The client will by guided learn what “home” feels like in their particular body. Body awareness is increased, as often is balance, coordination and stability. I have worked with a number of EDS clients over the years, and they have found SI work to be effective at significantly reducing chronic pain and discomfort, as well as stabilizing joints that had a tendency to displace easily. My understanding of why this last part happens is that when a joint is properly placed, it has to move further to be displaced, whereas when a joint is misplaced or unstable to begin with, it takes less to displace it. Developing overall body awareness and improving proprioception serve to catch the body from moving out of alignment sooner than later, and as a means to reinforce the newer, more orderly pattern. For further reading about this method I would recommend Dr. Rolf’s book “Rolfing”, published in 1979.
