I am a “mostly-retired” psychiatric nurse practitioner who has hEDS, contracting very part time with Suunta, which is a compassionate and open-minded group of nurse practitioners and mental health therapists. I have decades of experience working with individuals with chronic illness and disability. In my current practice, I only treat individuals who have some type of chronic pain/illness, or other functionally limiting diagnosis. Most of my patients have EDS and many are neurodivergent. We work on processing cumulative trauma of all sorts, including “medical gaslighting”. Coping strategies for functional limitations and techniques/treatments for calming the autonomic nervous system are priorities. Grief and adjustment associated with loss of abilities, and the anxiety and depression which can develop from a life lived with these conditions are addressed, with an emphasis on each patient’s goals for their most fulfilling future.
