Providing quality care and education for the symptomatic hypermobile population is a true passion at Body Reform Physical Therapy. Co-owner Mary Perkins Harris has had a lifetime of personal experience managing her own hEDS since long before she was diagnosed. She’s not only a Movement Therapist at Body Reform, but she’s also one of its clients, practicing what she teaches others and receiving manual therapy regularly. In addition to the movement and exercise needs of our hEDS and HSD population, Body Reform also addresses the hypo -mobility that often plays a significant role in pain and injuries through our system of manual therapy called The Bowstring Method®.Hypo-mobility (often experienced as stiffness) is a protective mechanism that limits the amount of movement in one or multiple parts of the body if another area is unstable. For instance, if your lumber spine is hyper-mobile and moves too much, your thoracic spine and hip flexors may get overly stiff or hypo-mobile in an attempt to stabilize your torso. If the rigid hypo-mobile areas of your body keep you from finding and maintaining proper joint positioning while in movement, it can result in increased tissue breakdown in the hyper-mobile body part. Using The Bowstring Method® of manual therapy, we can decrease aberrant tension patterns throughout muscles and joint complexes while normalizing tone, position, and function; and in a way that is intense but uniquely tolerable to the client. This hour-long, transformative style of bodywork partners well with posture, stability, and strength training for people living with hEDS and HDS.
